About the Speakers:

Janneke Adema

Dr Janneke Adema is a Research Fellow at the Centre for Postdigital Cultures at Coventry University. In her research, she explores the future of scholarly communications and experimental forms of knowledge production, where her work incorporates processual and performative publishing, radical open access, scholarly poethics, media studies, book history, cultural studies, and critical theory. She explores these issues in depth in her various publications, but also by supporting a variety of scholar-led, not-for-profit publishing projects, including the Radical Open Access Collective, Open Humanities Press, and ScholarLed. Jeroen Sondervan

Jeroen Sondervan is open access publishing consultant at Utrecht University Library. He has over 11 years of experience working in scholarly publishing. From 2007 until 2016 he has
been a commissioning editor for Amsterdam University Press working on open access monographs, journals and online projects and participated in the OAPEN project. Between 2013 and 2016 he worked as a freelance publishing consultant for other clients developing open access publishing services.

In his current capacity at Utrecht University he is involved in the development of the Open Science programme at the university. He is also a member of the Knowledge Exchange Open Access Group, the Dutch library consortium Open Access working group, and editor of the Dutch national platform openaccess.nl. In his free time he's running the Open Access in Media Studies website. His most recent publication is ‘Sustainable open access for scholarly journals in 6 years’ in Learned Publishing.

Robert-Jan Smits

Robert-Jan SMITS is the Open Access Envoy of the European Commission, based at the European political Strategy Centre (EPSC). In this capacity, Robert-Jan is responsible for proposing concrete policy recommendations to ensure that by 2020 all publicly funded scientific publications are available in Open Access.

He was the Director-General of DG Research and Innovation at the European Commission from 2010-2018. In this capacity, he was responsible for defining and implementing the EU policy and programmes in the field of research and innovation (with an average annual budget of €8 bn).

 

  • One of the main architects and negotiators of Horizon 2020, the €80 bn EU programme for science and innovation (2014-2020).
  • Instrumental in the development of the European Research Council (ERC), the European Roadmap for large scale facilities, Public-Private Partnerships in research, the Innovation Union, the European Research Area (ERA) and Open Science.
